Hi everyone! My name is Tess and I am a freshman originally from Ridgewood, NJ. I am planning to be a History major, and I’m so excited to be here at Hopkins! --------------------- Why Hopkins? One of the main reasons I chose to come to Hopkins was because of the significant research opportunities available for undergraduate students. I was offered to be part of the Woodrow Wilson Research Fellows Program here at Hopkins, and that was an opportunity I could not pass up. Additionally, I was really excited to attend a university with such a well-regarded History department - there aren’t just pre-med and engineers here! It also helped Homewood is one of the most beautiful campuses I have ever seen. --------------------- My Classes FALL 2010 The Archaeology of Early Greece Introduction to the Study of Film I, from 1892-1941 The United States since 1929 Intermediate French I Great Books at Hopkins --------------------- My Extracurriculars STUDENT ADMISSIONS ADVISORY BOARD. SAAB is the group of students who bring you Hopkins Interactive! There are currently ten freshmen on the board - make sure you check out the other freshman threads, they are amazing people. It is our job to share with prospective students about our lives here at Hopkins through our blogs, these forums, open houses and all sorts of admissions-related activities. It’s such an exciting group to be part of, because I get to share about all the amazing things I get to do here with people like you! WOODROW WILSON RESEARCH FELLOWS. The Woodrow Wilson Research Fellows (http://krieger.jhu.edu/woodrowwilson) is a program that funds undergraduate research projects. Hopkins does a spectacular job encouraging student research in all fields, and the Wilson program is just one of many examples of this support. Being a Fellow means that I receive money to pursue research in any field I want, making possibilities for a topic endless! Because I am only a freshman, I do not have to decide my research focus just yet, but I’ll keep you posted on my progress! JHU MODEL UN CONFERENCE. I was president of my high school’s Model UN team, so I was really excited when I was selected to serve as a director of the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee at the JHU Model UN Conference this February. The JHUMUNC is designed to give high school students exposure to the field of international studies by simulating United Nations conferences. I’m really excited for my committee, SOCHUM, and make sure to look out for me if you’re attending the conference! --------------------- My Dorm Life I currently live in Wolman Hall, obviously the best dorm on campus (I am a little bit biased). I live in a suite, which means I live in a double with my roommate, and we share a kitchen and a bathroom with another double. Living on my own is really exciting! It’s certainly a different dynamic than living at home (between the four of us the bathroom eventually gets clean and the dishes occasionally done), but I absolutely love living in 510 East!! --------------------- Follow Me Don’t forget to check out the class of 2014 blog!: http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/2014/ And please please ask my any questions you have! |

Hello! A couple questions for you... I'm involved with MUN and debate at my high school, and am pretty interested in keeping up with these extracurriculars in college. I was wondering if you could explain to me your involvement in MUN at Hopkins? You've written a lot about the opportunities available to you, how would you say your experience at Hopkins has compared with your friends who may attend other universities? Does everyone go out and seek internships and jobs and positions, or is that only a portion of the community? (Worded differently, are all JHU students motivated and self-driven?) I'm very interested in Hopkins, but need to gain more info before deciding to apply early or regular! Thanks so much, Tori |

Hi Tori - Thanks so much for your questions!! At Hopkins there are two branches of Model UN that you can be a part of. I was a part of the JHUMUNC, and we ran a conference in February for high school students. If you chose to be on the JHUMUNC staff, you help chair or direct a committee for the conference. The other is the actual Model UN team that competes in conferences including the National Model UN conference hosted by the JHU School of Advanced International Studies DC and the Harvard International Model UN conference. Every incoming freshman attends a Student Activities Fair during Orientation where you learn more about all the student groups on campus - there are over 320 student run organizations! If continuing MUN is of interest to you, you can find their booths at the Student Activities Fair, sign up for their email list and start your involvement. To address your question about my involvement at Hopkins compared to my friends’ involvement at other schools, I can’t say because I really only know what life is like here at Hopkins. However, I do know that I am the only one of my friends from home who has studied abroad, gotten funding for research and obtained a summer internship (all of which would not have been possible without Hopkins) just as a Freshman! Your other question is a little bit easier to answer because it was the very self-motivation and interest in involvement of the JHU students that made me want to come to Hopkins. I just wrote a blog (which you can check out here: http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/2014/2011/05/your-typical-blue-jay/) about how I feel the uniting characteristic of all Hopkins students is their passion for their academics and activities. It really is such an incredible environment to be a part of. One of the best ways to learn more about Hopkins is to actually visit the Homewood campus and experience it all for yourself! You can start planning your visit by going to the Admissions Office website (which you can find here: http://apply.jhu.edu/visit/visit.html?main) . If visiting is not an option for you, we have some amazing online resources for you to check out: The Freshman Class of 2014 Blog: http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/2014/ The Hopkins Interactive Flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hopkins-interactive/ JHU Twitter Accounts: http://www.hopkins-interactive.com/twitter/ The 2011 Insider’s Guide to Hopkins: http://www.hopkins-interactive.com/insiders-guide/ Hopkins Cribs: http://www.hopkins-interactive.com/cribs/ I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions!!
